NBA and NHL and College football odds recap for Friday, October 30, 2026: what the lines got right and wrong

Five NBA underdogs won on Friday, and the betting market had moved the wrong way before most of them. When the spread moved between open and close, the side it moved toward went 3-6. That's a poor night for the late numbers. A spread is the head start in points the oddsmakers give the weaker team, and a line move is how much that number shifts from the opening line to the final one before tipoff. On Friday those shifts mostly pointed toward the team that went on to lose.

NBA

The clearest example was in Dallas's home game against Houston. The Mavericks opened as 4.5-point favorites and closed as 5.5-point underdogs, a 10-point swing toward the Rockets. Dallas won 116-111 anyway. On the moneyline, which is a straight bet on who wins with no points involved, the Mavericks paid +164. That price gave them a 36.3% chance. Measured against the spread, they covered (beat the spread) by 10.5 points.

Philadelphia's home game against New York went the same way. The 76ers opened as 1.5-point favorites, the line moved 5 points toward the Knicks, and Philadelphia closed as a 3.5-point underdog. The Sixers won 98-93 at +130, which gave them a 41.7% chance, and covered by 8.5.

The biggest moneyline upset in the NBA was Orlando winning 121-114 in Toronto at +180, a 34.3% chance. The line had moved 2 points toward the Raptors, out to 5.5. The Magic covered by 12.5 instead. Golden State, also an underdog, beat the Lakers 112-95 at +124 (42.8%) and covered by 19.5. Washington was a slight underdog at -105, a 48.9% chance, and beat Charlotte 95-79.

One line move was right, and it was the biggest of the night. Miami opened as a 3.5-point underdog against Indiana and closed as an 8.5-point favorite, a 12-point move. The Heat won 145-125 and covered by 11.5. Minnesota went the other way: its line moved 3 points toward the Clippers, and then the Timberwolves won 127-101 and covered by 19.5. Boston beat Chicago by 14 after its line moved from 11.5 to 14.5. The Bulls covered by half a point.

The total is the oddsmakers' number for combined points, and bettors pick over or under it. The NBA split 5-5 on totals, but some of the misses were huge. Charlotte and Washington's total dropped from 234.5 to 218.5, so the move was in the right direction. They still scored only 174 points, 44.5 under the closing number. Indiana and Miami combined for 270, 33.5 over. New York and Philadelphia scored 191, 33.5 under. The Lakers and Warriors finished 27.5 under. When the total moved, the direction was right 3-5.

College football

The biggest upset of the day came from college football. Sacramento State, a +320 home underdog, beat Kent State 31-10. The closing line gave the Hornets a 22.8% chance. Their spread had moved 2 points toward them, from 9.5 to 7.5, and they covered by 28.5.

College football was the one place where line moves worked: the side the spread moved toward went 3-0. Baylor started as a 1.5-point underdog at UCF and closed as a 2.5-point favorite, so the favorite flipped. The Bears won 41-9 at -135, a 55.1% chance, and covered by 29.5. Tulane beat Charlotte 38-31 as a -340 favorite (74.1%). The spread had shrunk from 13.5 to 8.5 toward Charlotte, so the 49ers covered by 1.5 even though they lost.

That Tulane-Charlotte game also had the biggest totals miss in college football. The total rose from 45.5 to 47.5, and the teams scored 69, 21.5 over. Baylor-UCF finished half a point over. Kent State and Sacramento State went 6.5 under.

NHL

Every NHL total went over, 3-0, but barely: two games went over by half a goal and the third by 1.5. In Winnipeg at Florida, the total went up from 5.5 to 6.5, and the game finished with 7 goals.

The puck line is hockey's spread, usually 1.5 goals. Two underdogs won on near-even prices. New Jersey won 5-2 in Vegas at -105 and covered the puck line by 4.5. Calgary beat Seattle 6-2, also at -105, and covered by 5.5. Both prices gave the winners a 48.9% chance. Florida was the only favorite to win, beating Winnipeg 5-2 at -218 (65.7%). The Panthers won by 3 and covered the 1.5-goal puck line by 1.5.

The long shots

The most unlikely single result was Sacramento State. The market gave the Hornets a bit better than a 1 in 5 chance, and they won by 21. Orlando at 34.3% and Dallas at 36.3% were the longest NBA winners.

The pile-up of NBA underdogs is the bigger story. A parlay combines several bets into one ticket that only pays if every leg wins; these are hypotheticals, just for scale. The closing lines gave all five NBA underdog winners together about a 1 in 92 chance, and as one parlay they would have paid +7,335. Picking every winner of all 10 NBA games was about a 1 in 473 chance, worth +30,897 as one parlay.

The other two leagues were easier to call. Picking every NHL winner was about a 1 in 6 shot (+456), with the two NHL underdogs together about 1 in 4 (+281). Picking all three college football winners was about 1 in 11 (+846).

By the numbers

44.5: how far Charlotte and Washington finished under their closing total, the biggest totals miss of the day.

12: the size of Miami's line move, the biggest of the night and one of only three NBA spread moves that were right.

3-6: the record of the side the NBA spread moved toward. In college football it was 3-0.

4-6: NBA favorites against the spread. They went 5-5 straight up.

3-0: NHL overs, by a combined 2.5 goals.

NBA: every game against the line
