NBA and NHL and College football results for Thursday, October 22, 2026: the day in numbers
Two goalies stopped 41 shots apiece on Thursday night, and neither had ever made that many saves in a game we've tracked. Yaroslav Askarov's 41 saves were his most in any game in our records, which go back to 2023. Darcy Kuemper also stopped 41, his most since April 29, 2025. Both of their teams won on the road, and LA's win at NYI was an upset by records.
NHL
Askarov's busy night came in SJ's 6-2 win at OTT. He faced 43 shots and stopped 41, well above his pregame averages of 23.5 saves on 27.2 shots against. He had also been allowing 3.7 goals per game before this one, so holding OTT to two stood out. SJ has now won two straight and is 6-4-1. OTT fell to 7-4-0.
Kuemper made the same 41 saves on 43 shots in LA's 3-2 win at NYI. He came in averaging 22.6 saves on 26 shots, with 3.4 goals against, so he nearly doubled his usual workload. LA arrived at 1-4-2 and beat a NYI team that had been 5-3-1, which makes this the night's upset by records. Artemi Panarin scored both of his goals on four shots, against his pregame average of 0.6 goals per game. LA has now won two in a row and sits at 2-4-2. NYI is 5-3-2.
In STL's 6-2 win over VGK, the top line in our records was Justin Barron's. He had a goal and three assists, and those 4 points were his most in any game in our records, which go back to 2021. His goal was his first since April 16, 2025. Barron had been averaging 0.2 points per game. Dylan Holloway added two goals and an assist, with pregame averages of 0.1 goals and 0.8 points. STL has won two straight and is 5-4-1. VGK has lost two in a row and dropped to 8-4-0.
BOS beat NSH 6-0. David Pastrnak had two goals and two assists, more than three times his average of 1.2 points per game. Charlie McAvoy set up four goals. Those 4 points were his most since November 19, 2022, and he had been averaging 0.5 points. Michael DiPietro stopped all 28 shots for the shutout. BOS is 8-2-1, the best points total in this group. NSH is 3-3-3.
The highest-scoring game of the night was TOR's 5-4 win over NYR, and both teams got big nights from unexpected players. Adam Fox had four assists without a shot on goal. Those 4 points were his most since February 15, 2024, against an average of 0.9. For TOR, Brandon Duhaime had a goal and two assists. His 3 points were the most in any game in our records, which go back to 2021. He started the night averaging zero points and 0.5 shots per game. TOR has won three straight and is 6-4-2. NYR fell to 7-4-1.
PIT ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over FLA. Arturs Silovs stopped all 26 shots for the shutout, right around his usual 26.2 shots against. Nick Robertson scored twice on two shots, against his 0.4 goals per game. The four combined goals made it the lowest-scoring game of the night, about two below the season average of 6.2. PIT is 4-6-1. FLA has lost two straight and is 5-4-2.
Two more streaks grew. Roope Hintz scored both DAL goals on five shots in a 3-2 win over WPG. His pregame average was 0.3 goals per game. DAL has won four straight and is 6-3-1, while WPG has lost four in a row and is 4-3-3. NJ beat ANA 4-1 for its second straight win and is now 6-4-0. ANA has lost five straight and fell to 4-6-0.
One schedule note from our database: over the last 10 seasons, teams on the second night of a back-to-back against a rested opponent have won 42% of 2,634 games. Last night they went 0-2.
NBA
PHI beat CLE 114-106 in the only NBA game and is 2-0. CLE dropped its opener to 0-1. Tyrese Maxey and Donovan Mitchell each scored 32. Maxey shot 12-for-23 and added six assists. Mitchell went 11-for-19 and had 10 rebounds for a double-double.
PHI had four players in double figures beyond Maxey's 32. Joel Embiid scored 24 on 8-for-16 shooting, and Jaylen Brown added 21 points and eight rebounds. LeBron James shot only 5-for-14 but finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Evan Mobley scored 18 for CLE on 7-for-13 shooting. It's too early for season averages for any of them. The 220 combined points came in 8.6 below the league's early average of 228.6.

A few notes for you, not for publication:
- **No web reporting:** I hit the search tool's usage limit before getting any results. Nothing in the story comes from outlets, fans or news reports. It's built only on your data. - **Section order:** I put the NHL first even though the NBA is usually the bigger league. It had 8 of the 10 games and all of the database-only facts. Swap the sections if you want the NBA on top. - **Rosters:** Several players are listed with unusual teams, such as LeBron James and Jaylen Brown on PHI, Panarin on LA and Duhaime on TOR. I kept them as given, but it's worth checking the feed before publishing. - **Back-to-back fact:** The data doesn't say which two teams went 0-2, so the story doesn't name them.
